Steelers Defensive Backs Coach Resigns
Darren Perry resigned as The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs coach after meeting with new head coach Mike Tomlin on Wednesday morning in Mobile, Ala. One wonders if Vikings Defensive Backs coach Joe Woods is about to rejoin Tomlin in Pittsburgh.

Childress Statement Regarding Tomlin
Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress released the following statement today after the Pittsburgh Steelers introduced Mike Tomlin as their head coach:
“Mike is a great communicator, he knows how to tell players what he wants from them and gets them to follow through with his directions. He did a great job for us and I know the people in Pittsburgh will really like him once they get to know him.”

Steelers Press Conference
The Steelers will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. central time today to introduce Mike Tomlin as their new head coach. Tomlin will become the 16th head coach in Steelers history after coaching as defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006.
The press conference will take place at Steelers headquarters at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex.

Vikings Likely To Go In-House For New DC
Look for Brad Childress to hire one of two defensive assistants to replace departing Defensive Coordinator Mike Tomlin this week. It is likely that either linebackers coach Fred Pagac or defensive line coach Karl Dunbar will be tapped to replace Tomlin as the Vikings new DC.
Fred Pagac, linebackers; born April 26, 1952, Richeyville, Pa. Tight end Ohio State 1971-73. Pro tight end Chicago Bears 1974, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1976. College coach: Ohio State 1978-2000. Pro coach: Oakland Raiders 2001-03, Kansas City Chiefs 2004-05, joined Vikings in 2006.
Karl Dunbar, defensive line; born May 18, 1967, Plaisance, La. Defensive lineman Louisiana State 1986-89. It’s Official: Tomlin is Steelers’ New Coach
The controversy should now be put to bed.
FOXSports.com has learned that the Steelers have finally informed Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin that they have in fact chosen him as their next head coach. Tomlin is slated to fly to Pittsburgh by tomorrow morning provided the two sides can work out a contract.
The two sides have agreed to terms on a multi-year deal that is believed to be comparable to the four-year, $10 million deal Cam Cameron reached with the Miami Dolphins.
The Steelers are expected to officially announce Tomlin as their coach Monday.
Tomlin was originally scheduled to fly to Mobile, Alabama for this week’s Senior Bowl but was asked by Pittsburgh brass to not get on the plane.
Calls to Tomlin have not been returned but sources close to the coach said he expects to be able to work out the terms of the contract with the Steelers by this evening.

Sports Illustrated Backs Off Tomlin-to-Steelers Story
Sports Illustrated has backed away from Michael Silver’s exclusive story yesterday that the Pittsburgh Steelers had hired Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin as their new head coach. Although the story is still online, SI.com no longer links to it from its homepage. In fact, the web site has replaced its headline announcing SI’s “scoop” with a headline reading, “Steelers dispute reports, say no hiring yet”. The Tomlin story is also nowhere to be found on Silver’s archive.

At this point and time, the Steelers have not concluded a contract agreement with a new head coach, nor do we expect to do so today. There will be no other announcements from this office today.

Pittsburgh Tribune Reporting Steelers Pick Grimm Not Tomlin
Russ Grimm has been offered and has accepted the Steelers’ head coaching position, a source in Pittsburgh confirmed late Saturday.
Grimm, 47, succeeds Bill Cowher, who coached the Steelers for 15 seasons before resigning Jan. 5. The hiring of Grimm will be announced Monday at a news conference.
ESPN and SI.com, Sports Illustrated’s Web site, reported yesterday that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin had been chosen to replace Cowher.
An NFL source confirmed yesterday that Tomlin had not heard from the Steelers and no contract negotiations had taken place.

SI.com Reporting Steelers Choose Tomlin
The official announcement will come either later Saturday or on Sunday.
Tomlin, 34, impressed the Steelers during the interview process with his organization skills, intelligence and grasp of the game, according to a source familiar with the coaching search.
He succeeds Bill Cowher, who resigned Jan. 5 after 15 seasons as the Steelers’ coach.
Tomlin beat out Russ Grimm, 47, a Steelers assistant for six seasons and their assistant head coach for three, who had been considered the front-runner. The other finalist for the job was Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera.
Before joining the Vikings a year ago, Tomlin had spent five years as a defensive coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before that, he was a college assistant at Cincinnati, Arkansas State, Memphis and Virginia Military Institute.
Tomlin will become only the third Steelers head coach in 38 years and the NFL’s sixth African-American head coach.
