ESPN 1998 Vikings Team Best To Not Make Super Bowl

1. 1998 Minnesota Vikings (15-1, 1-1)

Minnesota put on an intense display of offensive fireworks, scoring an NFL-record 556 points. Then the Vikings ran up against a determined Atlanta squad in the NFC Championship Game. Randall Cunningham enjoyed the best season of his career, with a 106.0 passer rating, and Robert Smith racked up 1,478 yards from scrimmage. Cris Carter and Randy Moss teamed up for 2,324 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns. The Vikings’ only regular-season loss was by a field goal on the road. Few in football circles gave the Falcons, 11-point underdogs, much of a chance. But who could have anticipated Atlanta’s Chris Chandler throwing for 340 yards and three touchdowns? And as any Vikings fan will tell you, the backbreaker was Gary Anderson’s 38-yard missed field goal attempt with 2:07 left in the fourth quarter. Anderson had been perfect on 37 previous tries that season, but he missed with the season on the line, and Minnesota lost in overtime. So unexpected was Atlanta’s victory that The Miami Herald announced “Denver Broncos vs. Minnesota Vikings” across the top of an early edition of its Sunday paper.

No way. The 1975 Vikings were by far the better team. They were ranked 3rd in the league in offense and 3rd in defense. The 1998 team was number 1 in offense but the defense was middle of the road.

How could he miss a short 38 yard field goal that he had made all that year, Imean come on he is the first kicker to put up a perfect season.

Almost ten years later, and I’m still tearing up. They will never get the respect they deserve because people only recognize champions. Put them against the last 16 super bowl winners and the ‘98 Vikings would still go 15-1(the one loss would be random). They are the best NFL team to ever take the field. To the guy that said the defense was “middle of the road”, we gave up the 6th least points that year (our offense was never on the field very long). And where the ‘75 team was 3rd in offense, that year, the ‘98 Vikes had the best offense EVER. So the #1 ranking only applies because they would have to invent something new to describe our awesome power. What we were has never been seen before and will probably never be seen again.
